Quick Answer

Most console tables are 28 to 32 inches high. Behind a sofa, choose one level with the sofa back or an inch or two lower, no longer than the sofa. In a hallway or entry, a depth of 10 to 14 inches keeps the path clear; leave about 36 inches to walk past. In very narrow halls, go floating.

A console table looks simple, but the wrong size is easy to spot: a table that peeks above the sofa, a hallway you have to turn sideways to pass or a long wall with a tiny table floating in the middle.

Three numbers decide it: height, depth and length. Here is how to get each one right behind a sofa, in an entryway and in a hallway. Once it is in place, our console table styling ideas help you dress it.

Where Height Depth Length
Behind a sofa Level with the sofa back or 1–2 in lower 12–18 in, if the room allows No longer than the sofa; often 2/3 to 3/4 of it
Entryway 30–34 in 12–16 in Leave some wall on each side
Hallway 28–32 in 8–14 in To suit the wall; keep 36 in to walk
Very narrow hall Set to suit you 8–12 in floating Short enough to keep doors clear

Behind a sofa

Height

Measure from the floor to the top of the sofa back. Most sofa backs are about 30 to 34 inches. Choose a console at that height or an inch or two lower, so the top is easy to reach for a lamp or a drink but does not tower over the cushions.

Length

Keep the console shorter than the sofa. Around two thirds to three quarters of the sofa's length looks balanced and leaves room to walk around the ends.

Depth

If the sofa floats in the room, a deeper console of 14 to 18 inches gives space for lamps and baskets. If it sits close to a walkway, stay slimmer. See how to arrange a sofa, rug and coffee table for spacing.

Our Ribbona console table has a slim top on a looping base, made for entryways, hallways and behind sofas. It comes in four sizes from 50 to 80 inches wide, 30 to 34 inches high and 12 to 14 inches deep, from $2,700.

In an entryway

  • Height: 30 to 34 inches feels natural for dropping keys and mail while standing.
  • Depth: 12 to 16 inches holds a lamp and a tray without crowding the door.
  • Length: leave some wall on each side so the table does not look squeezed.
  • Door swing: check that the front door and any closet doors open fully.
  • Mirror: hang it about 6 to 10 inches above the top, roughly two thirds of the table's width.

When the entry is wide, a deeper console makes a statement. Our Hollowstead console table sets a live edge top on a root-inspired base, in four sizes from 50 to 79 inches wide, 30 inches high and 20 to 24 inches deep, from $2,002.

In a hallway

Hallways are where depth matters most. Measure the hall width and subtract the depth of the console; aim to keep about 36 inches clear to walk. In tighter halls, 8 to 12 inches of depth is often all you can spare.

For Narrow Halls

A floating console

A wall-mounted console keeps the floor clear and lets you choose the height. Our Coveford floating console comes in five lengths from 20 to 60 inches and 8 to 12 inches deep, from $405.90. Fix it into studs.

Common sizing mistakes

  • Taller than the sofa back. It looks like a wall behind the seat.
  • Longer than the sofa. The ends stick out into walkways.
  • Too deep for the hall. People bump it every day.
  • Too small for the wall. A short table on a long wall looks lost; add a bench or a large mirror.
  • Forgetting doors and vents. Check swing paths and floor vents before you order.

Key Takeaway

Choose a console table 28 to 32 inches high, level with or slightly below the sofa back when it sits behind a sofa, and no longer than the sofa. In entries and halls, keep the depth around 10 to 14 inches and about 36 inches clear to walk; in very narrow halls, go floating.

Woodfurnist Design Tip

Tape the console's outline on the floor and walk past it with a laundry basket. If you have to turn sideways, choose a slimmer depth.
