Driftwood furniture is made from wood that rivers, lakes or the sea have carried and weathered, then cleaned, dried and sealed for indoor use. No two pieces match. It works best as a sculptural base, shelf or accent rather than a hard-wearing tabletop. Indoors it needs little more than dusting, steady humidity and distance from heat.
Driftwood brings something a lumber yard cannot: shapes that water, sun and time made long before anyone picked up a tool. That is why it shows up in sculptural bookshelves, console bases and side tables. It also raises fair questions: Is it clean? Will it last? Is it even real driftwood? This guide answers them so you can buy with confidence.
What is driftwood furniture?
Driftwood is wood that wind, tides or waves have washed onto a shore or riverbank. Most of it comes from trees that reached the water through floods, storms or logging, so it can be almost any species. Time in the water rounds its contours, and sun and abrasion wear the surface into the soft, silvery, sculpted look it is known for.
In furniture, driftwood is usually used where its shape matters most:
- Bases for console, coffee and side tables, often paired with a solid live edge top.
- Branch-style shelves and tree bookshelves, where the natural forks become the supports.
- Small accents such as vanity shelves and wall pieces.
Real driftwood vs "driftwood finish" vs root wood
The word "driftwood" is used for three very different things in furniture listings. Knowing which one you are looking at explains most of the price differences.
| What the listing says | What it usually means | How to tell |
|---|---|---|
| Driftwood (natural form) | Weathered wood used in its natural shape, cleaned, dried and sealed | Irregular, one-off shapes; the seller can show you the exact piece or a close match |
| "Driftwood" color or finish | Ordinary wood, veneer or MDF stained a weathered gray | Straight, factory-cut edges; the same item looks identical in every photo |
| Root or branch wood | Tree roots or limbs carved and sanded into sculptural shapes | Dense, twisting grain at the joints; often sold alongside driftwood pieces |
If the shape is irregular and the seller can describe the exact piece, you are looking at natural wood. If every photo shows the same straight lines, "driftwood" is probably just the color name.
How driftwood is prepared for indoor use
Raw driftwood from a beach or riverbank is not ready to live in your home. A careful maker takes it through a few essential stages: For the questions to ask any maker, see is furniture made in Vietnam good quality?
1. Selection
Sound wood only. Pieces that are soft, punky or badly split are set aside, because weathering has already removed the weakest fibers from the good ones.
2. Cleaning
Sand, salt, grit and loose bark are washed and brushed out of every crevice so nothing comes indoors with the wood.
3. Drying
Driftwood can hold a lot of water. It must dry slowly and fully before it is shaped or joined, or it will keep shrinking and cracking in your home.
4. Shaping and sealing
The piece is cut to fit, sanded where hands and objects touch, fixed securely to tops or wall brackets, and finished so the surface is sealed and easy to dust.
When you buy, ask the maker how each of these steps is handled. A good maker will answer without hesitation.

How long does driftwood furniture last?
Indoors, a well-dried, sealed driftwood piece can last for decades, the same as other solid wood furniture. How long a particular piece lasts depends on three things:
- The species underneath. Driftwood can be any tree, so hardness varies from piece to piece.
- How well it was dried. Wood that still holds moisture keeps moving after it arrives.
- Where it does its work. Weathered surfaces are textured and can be softer than fresh-cut wood. That is why driftwood is best used as a base or shelf, with a solid slab top wherever you set down drinks or work.
Our driftwood console tables follow that rule: the sculptural driftwood forms the base, and a solid live edge slab forms the top you actually use.

How to care for driftwood furniture
- Dust with a soft brush, such as a clean paintbrush or a vacuum brush attachment, to reach the crevices, then follow with a dry microfiber cloth.
- Never soak it. If something spills, blot it and wipe with a barely damp cloth, then let it air dry.
- Keep it away from heaters, fireplaces and humidifiers. Steady conditions keep the wood from moving.
- Check wall fixings once a year on branch shelves and tree bookshelves, especially if they carry books.
- Never burn offcuts. The US EPA lists driftwood among materials you should not burn in a wood stove, because salt-laden wood can release toxic chemicals.
Pieces that combine driftwood with a solid top follow the same routine as any solid wood table; our guide on cleaning solid wood furniture covers the top.
Give driftwood room to read as sculpture. A plain wall, a lamp that casts light across its texture, and only two or three objects on top will do more than a crowded shelf. For other tones in the room, see our guide to light wood vs dark wood.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is driftwood furniture durable?
Yes, when the wood is sound, fully dried and sealed. Indoors it can last for decades. Because weathered surfaces can be softer and textured, driftwood works best as a base, shelf or accent, with a solid slab top for everyday use.
Is driftwood furniture safe to bring indoors?
Yes, if it has been properly cleaned and dried. Raw driftwood can carry sand, salt and moisture, so buy from a maker who cleans and dries each piece before shaping and sealing it.
Is driftwood furniture real driftwood?
Not always. Some listings use "driftwood" as a color name for gray-stained wood, veneer or MDF. Natural driftwood pieces have irregular, one-off shapes, and the seller should be able to describe the exact piece.
How do you clean driftwood furniture?
Dust it with a soft brush to reach the crevices, then wipe with a dry microfiber cloth. Never soak it. For spills, blot and wipe with a barely damp cloth, then let the wood air dry.
Does driftwood crack over time?
Driftwood that is fully dried before it is made into furniture is stable. Small surface checks are part of its character. Keep it away from heaters and big humidity swings to prevent new cracks.
How much does driftwood furniture cost at Woodfurnist?
Woodfurnist driftwood pieces range from $330 for a live edge vanity shelf to $6,268.90 for the largest live edge driftwood console table. Every piece is handmade to order and ships free within the US in about 12 to 17 business days.
