To install a wall tree bookshelf safely, screw it into at least two wall studs or into masonry with the right anchors, never into bare drywall alone. Find the studs, level the main trunk first, pre-drill, and use hardware rated for your wall. Then load heavy books low and close to the trunk.
A wall tree bookshelf is part furniture, part sculpture. Its trunk and branches spread across the wall, and the shelves sit on those branches. That shape is what makes it beautiful, and it is also why mounting matters: the weight of books and plants is spread out to the side, not stacked on the floor.
The good news is that a careful install is straightforward. This guide covers what to check before you drill, the tools you need, a step-by-step process and how to load the shelves so the piece stays secure for years.
Before you drill: check these four things
| Check | Why it matters | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Wall type | Drywall, plaster and masonry each need different hardware | Tap the wall, look at an outlet edge, or ask your builder |
| Stud locations | Studs carry far more weight than drywall | Mark them with a stud finder; many US homes space studs about 16 in apart |
| Pipes and wires | Drilling into them is dangerous and costly | Use a scanner that detects live wires and avoid areas above outlets and switches |
| Size and clearance | Branches spread wider than you may expect | Tape the outline on the wall before drilling |

Built to be wall-mounted
Our Cedardale live edge tree shelf comes in three sizes from 40 to 60 inches high and 8 to 10 inches deep, from $1,480. Its listing notes that professional wall mounting is required for safety and stability.
What you need
| Tool or hardware | Used for |
|---|---|
| Stud finder with wire detection | Finding studs and avoiding live wires |
| Level (24 in or longer) | Leveling the trunk and main shelves |
| Drill and bits | Pilot holes in wood, and a masonry bit for brick or concrete |
| Wood screws for studs | The main fixing points, long enough to reach well into the stud |
| Rated wall anchors | Heavy-duty toggles for hollow walls, masonry anchors for brick or concrete |
| Painter's tape and pencil | Marking the outline and screw points |
| A helper | Holding the piece level while you fix it |
The small kit of wood glue, wood powder and screws that comes with every Woodfurnist order is for assembly and touch-ups. For the wall itself, use fixings rated for your wall type and the weight you plan to load.
How to install a wall tree bookshelf, step by step
1. Plan the position
Tape the outline of the tree on the wall. Step back and check the height: the lowest shelf should clear furniture below it, and the highest should be reachable. Shift the outline so the main trunk lines up with as many studs as possible.
2. Mark studs and fixing points
Mark each stud inside the outline. Hold the piece up with your helper and mark where its mounting points meet the studs. Aim for at least two solid fixings into studs or masonry.
3. Level the trunk first
The trunk sets the line for everything else. Level it, then mark and pre-drill the first fixing point near the top of the trunk.
4. Fix the top, then the rest
Drive the first screw, check level again, then add the remaining fixings. Where a point lands between studs, use a heavy-duty anchor rated for the load, not a small plastic plug.
5. Test before you load
Press down gently on each shelf and on the outer branches. Nothing should move, creak or pull away from the wall. If it does, stop and add fixings before loading.

Bigger spread, more fixing points
Our Thornbrook tree bookshelf comes in four sizes from 40 by 40 inches to 70 by 70 inches, 8 to 10 inches deep, from $2,799. Larger, wider pieces like this benefit from more fixing points across the trunk.
How to load a tree bookshelf
- Heavy items low and close to the trunk. Books and large pots belong on the lower, wider shelves near the center.
- Light items on outer branches. Small plants, candles and frames suit the tips, where leverage is greatest.
- Spread the weight. Balance both sides of the tree rather than filling one side.
- Load gradually. Add items over a day or two and check the wall and fixings again.
- Keep climbing out of the picture. In kids' rooms and nurseries, keep toys children will reach for on low shelves so no one climbs.
The same leverage rules apply to any shelf; our guide to how much weight a floating shelf can hold explains why. Once it is up, see how to style a tree bookshelf with books, plants and light.
When to call a professional
| Situation | Why a pro helps |
|---|---|
| Plaster, tile or old walls | Needs the right bits and anchors to avoid cracking |
| No studs where the trunk needs to go | Blocking or special anchors may be needed |
| Very large pieces (60 in and up) | Heavier and harder to hold level |
| Nursery or kids' room | Extra peace of mind for a room where children play |
| The listing says professional mounting is required | Follow the maker's instructions |
Mount a wall tree bookshelf into at least two studs or masonry, level the trunk first, use anchors rated for your wall where there is no stud, and test before loading. Keep heavy books low and near the trunk, and call a pro for tricky walls or very large pieces.
Leave a few branches almost empty. A tree bookshelf looks most like a real tree when some of its shape shows through.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you mount a wall tree bookshelf?
Mark the studs, tape the outline, level the trunk, pre-drill, and fix the piece into at least two studs or masonry. Use heavy-duty rated anchors for any point that falls between studs, then test before loading.
Can I hang a tree bookshelf on drywall without studs?
It is not recommended. Plastic drywall anchors hold very little. If studs are not available, use heavy-duty toggle anchors rated for the load or ask a professional.
What hardware do I need for a tree bookshelf?
Wood screws long enough to reach well into the studs, plus rated toggle or masonry anchors for hollow or brick walls. Choose hardware based on your wall type and planned load.
How much weight can a wall tree bookshelf hold?
It depends on the mounting, the wall and where the weight sits. Keep heavy books on lower shelves near the trunk and lighter items on the outer branches.
Is a wall tree bookshelf safe for a kids' room?
Yes, when it is mounted into studs or masonry and loaded sensibly. Keep the things children reach for on low shelves so no one climbs.
Do I need two people to install it?
Yes. One person holds the piece level while the other marks and drives the screws.
