How to Tell If Furniture Is Solid Wood: 7 Simple Checks

Edges, end grain and seven quick checks for solid wood vs veneer

Quick Answer

To tell if furniture is solid wood, look at the edges and end grain: on solid wood the grain pattern runs over the edge and continues on the other side. Check the underside, feel the weight and watch for repeating patterns. Veneer shows a thin line at the edge, and laminate repeats the same print.

"Real wood" can mean very different things on a product page. It may describe a solid slab, a thin wood veneer glued over particleboard, or a printed paper that only looks like wood. All three can look similar in a photo, and all three can be sold as wood furniture.

None of these is automatically bad. Good veneer furniture can last for years, and laminate is easy to wipe clean. But they are not the same product, and the price, weight, lifespan and repair options differ a lot. These seven checks help you know what you are looking at before you buy.

Solid wood, veneer, laminate: what the words mean

Term What it is Can it be sanded and refinished?
Solid wood Boards or slabs of real wood all the way through Yes, many times
Wood veneer A thin layer of real wood glued over plywood, MDF or particleboard Lightly, once or twice at most
Laminate or foil A printed plastic or paper layer with a wood pattern No
Engineered wood MDF, particleboard or plywood, usually covered by veneer or laminate Depends on the surface layer
"Wood finish" or "wood look" Describes the color or appearance, not the material Usually no

7 checks to tell if furniture is solid wood

1. Follow the grain over the edge

This is the most reliable check. On solid wood, the grain pattern on the top continues over the edge and down the side, because it is one piece of wood. On veneer, the top pattern stops at the edge, and the edge has either a separate strip with a different pattern or a very straight, thin seam. For tree bookshelves specifically, see real wood vs MDF tree bookshelves.

2. Look at the end grain

The ends of a solid board show end grain: tiny pores and growth rings, often a little rougher and darker than the face. If the end of a tabletop looks smooth and uniform, or shows layers of plywood or the fine dust texture of particleboard, it is not solid wood.

The Easiest Tell

A live edge can't be faked by veneer

A true live edge follows the outside of the tree, so the grain, color and texture continue from the top into the edge. Our Mossford live edge coffee table is cut from a single slab and comes in sizes from 24 to 48 inches, from $1,692.90.

3. Check the underside and the back

Makers often finish the underside and back more simply, so the real material shows. Look under a tabletop, inside a drawer or on the back panel. Raw wood with visible grain is a good sign. Exposed particleboard, MDF or a paper backing tells you the core is engineered.

4. Look for a repeating pattern

Real wood never repeats. Laminate and foil are printed, so the same knot or swirl can appear again a few feet away, or on several drawer fronts. If two areas look exactly alike, it is a print.

5. Feel the texture and the weight

Run your hand across the surface. Real wood, even under a smooth finish, often has slight texture where the grain opens. Laminate feels uniformly flat and a little plastic. Solid wood is also heavy for its size. A large table that is easy to lift with one hand is rarely solid wood, although MDF can be heavy too, so use weight together with the other checks.

6. Read the product wording closely

"Solid wood" should name the material. Watch for softer phrases such as "wood finish", "wood look", "wood grain" or "solid wood and engineered wood", which may mean only some parts are solid. If a listing names a wood species for the legs but not the top, ask about the top.

7. Ask the seller three questions

  • Is the top solid wood all the way through? Ask about the top, legs and sides separately.
  • What wood species is it? A clear answer such as oak, walnut or acacia is a good sign.
  • Can it be sanded and refinished? Solid wood can; thin veneer and laminate can't.

Our guide to oak vs walnut furniture explains how two common species differ in look and care.

The same checks work on shelves

Look at the front edge of a shelf: on solid wood the grain wraps around it. Our Larchdale live edge floating shelf is cut from a single slab with a natural edge, in lengths from 20 to 60 inches, from $405.90.

Solid wood vs veneer: which is right for you?

Question Solid wood Veneer over engineered wood
Lifespan Decades, and can be refinished Years; the surface wears through eventually
Scratches and dents Can often be sanded out Deep marks may reach the core
Movement with humidity Expands and contracts a little Very stable
Weight Heavy Lighter to medium
Look Each piece unique; live edge possible Consistent, can be book-matched
Price Higher Lower

Solid wood moves with humidity, which is normal and part of owning it. Our guide to live edge furniture explains why every slab is different, and smooth vs rough wood finishes shows how the surface changes the feel.

Key Takeaway

Follow the grain over the edge, check the end grain and the underside, look for repeating patterns, feel the weight and read the wording. When in doubt, ask whether the top is solid wood all the way through and whether it can be refinished.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if furniture is solid wood or veneer?

Look at the edge. On solid wood the grain continues from the top over the edge and down the side. On veneer, the pattern stops at the edge and you may see a thin seam or a separate edge strip.

Is veneer furniture bad?

No. Good veneer over a stable core can last for years and resists movement. It just can't be sanded and refinished as many times as solid wood.

Does heavy mean solid wood?

Not always. Solid wood is heavy, but MDF and particleboard can be heavy too. Use weight together with the edge, end grain and underside checks.

What does "wood finish" mean?

It usually describes the color or look, not the material. The piece may be laminate or veneer. Ask the seller what the top is made of.

Is live edge furniture always solid wood?

A true live edge follows the outside of the tree, so it comes from a solid slab. Some products imitate the look, so check that the grain continues into the edge.

Can solid wood furniture crack?

Small checks can appear as solid wood adjusts to humidity, especially in the first year. Keeping indoor humidity steady keeps movement small.
