Dust a live edge table with a soft cloth, wipe spills right away and use a soft brush on the natural edge, where dust and crumbs collect. Clean with a slightly damp cloth, then dry. Keep humidity around 35 to 55 percent, use coasters and fill small surface checks only once they stop moving.
A live edge table looks like it needs special treatment, and in one place it does: the natural edge. The flat top is sealed and cleans like any finished wood surface. The edge has curves, small hollows and sometimes knots that catch dust, crumbs and spills in ways a straight edge never would.
This guide focuses on that difference. For general cleaning products and methods, see our guide to cleaning solid wood furniture.
Daily and weekly care
| How often | What to do |
|---|---|
| Every day | Wipe spills and crumbs; use coasters, placemats and trivets |
| Every week | Dust the top with a soft dry cloth; brush the edge |
| Every month | Wipe with a slightly damp cloth and mild soap if needed, then dry |
| Each season | Check for new surface checks, loose fibers on the edge and wobbly legs |

A thick slab with a sealed top
Our Juniperhaven live edge coffee table pairs a thick natural slab with solid block legs, in four sizes from 24 to 48 inches long and 16 to 18 inches high, from $1,472.90.
Caring for the natural edge
- Brush, then wipe. A soft paintbrush or a clean makeup brush lifts dust from hollows. Follow with a barely damp cloth and dry it.
- Dry spills on the edge first. The edge shows more open grain than the top, so liquid can sink in faster there.
- Check for loose fibers. If a tiny splinter lifts, press it back with a little wood glue, or trim it carefully with a sharp blade.
- Avoid snagging cloths. Use soft cotton or microfiber, not terry towels that catch on rough spots.
- Keep bags and keys off the edge. Dragging hard items along it wears the finish fastest.
Do not soak the table, use steam cleaners, or spray glass cleaner, bleach or ammonia on it. Our pieces are sealed with polyurethane, so wax and silicone furniture sprays are not needed and can leave a cloudy film.
Checks and small cracks
Small hairline checks, often near knots or the ends, are a normal part of natural wood adjusting to indoor air. Most stay small and do not affect strength. What helps is slowing down moisture changes rather than fighting them.
- Keep humidity steady, ideally around 35 to 55 percent, with a humidifier in dry winters if needed.
- Keep the table away from heat, such as vents, radiators and fireplaces.
- Watch a new check for a few weeks. If it stops growing, it is stable.
- Fill only stable checks. Mix wood glue with fine wood powder, press it in, let it cure and smooth it gently.
A small repair kit comes with your table
Every Woodfurnist order ships with wood glue, wood powder and screws, so you can fill a minor check or tighten a small knock yourself. If something does not look right, send us a photo and we will help. Read more in why live edge tables crack.

Natural grain, flowing edges
Our Maplefield live edge coffee table is cut from a single slab and polished by hand, in four sizes from 24 to 48 inches long, from $1,472.90.
Water rings, heat marks and scratches
| Problem | First thing to try |
|---|---|
| White ring from a cold glass | Wipe dry and leave it; light rings in the finish often fade within a day or two |
| Fresh spill on the edge | Blot, do not rub; dry the hollows with a cloth corner or brush |
| Heat mark from a hot dish | Stop using the spot, let it rest; ask for advice before sanding |
| Fine scratch in the finish | A matching touch-up marker or wax stick |
For deeper marks, see our step-by-step guide to small scratches in wood furniture.
Light and placement
Strong direct sun slowly changes the color of any wood and can dry one side faster than the other. Turn objects on the top now and then so the color ages evenly, and use sheer curtains in very bright rooms. Our guide to humidity and solid wood explains how the seasons affect a slab.

Give the wood some space from heat
A fireplace makes a cozy setting, but keep a live edge table a comfortable distance from the heat. Our Birchmere live edge coffee table comes in four sizes from 24 to 48 inches long, from $1,472.90.
Treat the sealed top like any finished wood and give the natural edge extra attention: brush out dust, dry spills there first and keep hard items off it. Hold humidity around 35 to 55 percent, keep the table away from heat, use coasters and fill small checks only once they are stable.
Keep a soft brush in a drawer near the table. A ten-second sweep along the edge once a week keeps it looking crisp and stops dust from settling into the grain.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I clean a live edge table?
Dust with a soft dry cloth, wipe with a slightly damp cloth when needed and dry right away. Brush the natural edge to lift dust from hollows.
How do I protect the natural edge?
Dry spills there first, keep hard items from dragging along it and press down any loose fiber with a little wood glue.
Should I oil or wax a live edge table?
Not if it has a polyurethane finish like ours. Oils, wax and silicone sprays are not needed and can leave a film.
Are small cracks in a live edge table normal?
Yes. Small surface checks are common as natural wood adjusts. Keep humidity steady and fill them only once they stop growing.
What humidity is best for a live edge table?
About 35 to 55 percent, without fast swings.
How do I remove a water ring?
Wipe it dry and give it a day or two; light rings in the finish often fade. Avoid sanding without advice.
