Measure your mattress, and the right height follows

Quick Answer

A nightstand should sit within about 2 inches of the top of your mattress, level with it or a little lower. Most mattress tops are 22 to 28 inches off the floor, so most nightstands are 22 to 28 inches tall. Low platform beds need lower tables; tall beds need taller ones.

A nightstand does a few small jobs every night: it holds a lamp, a glass of water, your phone and the book you fall asleep with. When it is the right height, you reach for those things without thinking. When it is wrong, you stretch up to a tall table or fumble down the side of the bed in the dark.

The good news is that you do not need a standard number. You need one measurement from your own bed.

The mattress-height rule

  1. Measure from the floor to the top of your mattress, including any topper.
  2. Aim for a nightstand level with that point or up to 2 inches lower. Up to 2 inches higher still feels comfortable.
  3. Test the reach. Lie down and stretch your arm to where a glass would go. Your hand should land on the top, not the edge.

Nightstand height by bed type

Low platform and floor beds

Japandi-style platform beds often put the mattress top at 12 to 20 inches. A standard 26-inch nightstand will tower over the bed here. Look for a low table or a wide stool around 14 to 20 inches, and keep the lamp low and warm.

Standard frame with box spring or foundation

Most American bed setups land between 22 and 28 inches. This is where the common 24 to 26-inch nightstand fits naturally, as long as you check your own mattress.

Tall beds and thick mattresses

A deep pillow-top on a high frame can reach 30 inches or more. Choose a taller nightstand, or a table with a lower shelf so the top stays close to mattress level while storage sits below.

Beds with a wide frame or rails

Thick upholstered frames push the nightstand farther from your pillow. Measure from the mattress edge, not the frame edge, and consider a slightly taller or deeper table so the top is still in easy reach.

Width, depth and spacing

  • Width: about 18 to 24 inches holds a lamp, a glass and a book. In tight rooms, 14 to 16 inches works with a slim lamp.
  • Depth: 14 to 22 inches. Deeper than about 22 inches can block the walkway beside the bed.
  • Gap to the bed: leave about 2 to 6 inches so sheets tuck in and the table does not rub the frame.
  • Walkway: try to keep around 24 inches or more of clear floor on the side you get in and out.
  • Scale to the bed: a king bed can carry wider nightstands; a twin or full looks better with smaller ones.

Round tables are easier to walk past in a narrow bedroom. Our Birchfield side table comes in four sizes from 16 to 25 inches high and 14 to 20 inches across, from $1,296.

Getting the lamp right

The table and lamp work as one unit. When you sit up in bed, the bottom of the shade should be at about shoulder to chin height, so light falls on the page rather than in your eyes. A lower nightstand can take a taller lamp, and a tall nightstand needs a shorter lamp.

Nightstand height Lamp height that usually works
18–22 in Taller lamps, around 24–30 in
23–27 in Medium lamps, around 18–26 in
28 in and up Shorter lamps, around 14–20 in, or a wall sconce

A compact lamp for a small top

Our Infinia table lamp has an 8 by 8 inch base, so it leaves room for a glass and a book. It comes in 14, 16 and 20-inch heights, in Natural, Walnut, Brown or Black, from $886.

Do nightstands have to match?

No. Two different nightstands can look relaxed and personal. What makes a pair feel balanced is similar height, so the tops line up across the bed, and lamps with shades at roughly the same level. If one side needs more storage, choose a table with a drawer there and a simpler piece on the other.

If there is no room for a nightstand at all, a shelf mounted beside the bed can hold the basics. See our floating shelves over the bed ideas for placement.

Key Takeaway

Measure your mattress top and choose a nightstand within about 2 inches of it, usually 22 to 28 inches tall. Go lower for platform beds and taller for high beds, keep the depth under about 22 inches, leave 2 to 6 inches to the bed and pick a lamp that puts the shade near shoulder height.

Woodfurnist Design Tip

Before you order, stack books or a sturdy box beside the bed at the height you are considering. Use it for a few nights with your lamp and water glass. If you never think about it, the height is right.

Frequently Asked Questions

How tall should a nightstand be compared to the bed?

Within about 2 inches of the top of the mattress, ideally level with it or slightly lower.

What is the standard nightstand height?

Most nightstands are 22 to 28 inches tall, because most mattress tops sit in that range.

What height nightstand for a platform bed?

Usually 16 to 20 inches, matched to the lower mattress top.

How far should a nightstand be from the bed?

About 2 to 6 inches, so bedding can tuck in and the table stays within reach.

Can a nightstand be taller than the bed?

Slightly, up to about 2 inches. Much taller and you reach up awkwardly from your pillow.

Should nightstands match?

They do not have to. Keep the heights similar so the two sides of the bed feel balanced.
