Height, both walls, trim and a quick square check

Quick Answer

Before you buy a corner tree bookshelf, measure the height from floor to ceiling and how far each wall runs from the corner to the nearest obstacle: a window, a door, a vent or an outlet. Check whether the corner is square and note the baseboard. Then choose a shelf a few inches smaller than the space in every direction.

A corner tree bookshelf turns the most awkward spot in a room into its focal point. Because it sits between two walls, it also has twice as many things to bump into: window trim on one side, a light switch on the other, a baseboard that pushes it forward.

Ten minutes with a tape measure prevents almost every problem. Here is exactly what to measure, in order, and how to turn those numbers into the right size.

What you need

  • A tape measure, ideally 16 feet or longer.
  • Painter's tape to mark the outline on the walls and floor.
  • A pencil and paper, or your phone, to sketch the corner and write numbers down.
  • A level or a phone level app to check the walls and floor.

How to measure your corner, step by step

1. Measure the height

Measure from the floor to the ceiling right in the corner. Subtract 10 to 12 inches so the top branches have room to read as branches, not as something wedged under the ceiling. Our tree bookshelf size guide explains this headroom rule.

2. Measure each wall separately

Run the tape along the left wall from the corner to the first obstacle, then do the same on the right wall. Obstacles include window and door trim, a door that swings into the corner, heating vents, thermostats, outlets and light switches. Write down both numbers; corners are rarely the same on both sides.

3. Note the baseboard and trim

Measure how far the baseboard sticks out from the wall, often about half an inch. A shelf that sits on the floor will sit that far forward unless it is notched or wall-mounted above the baseboard.

4. Check that the corner is square

Mark a point 3 feet along one wall and 4 feet along the other. The straight distance between the marks should be 5 feet. If it is noticeably more or less, the corner is not a true 90 degrees, so leave a little extra clearance.

5. Check the floor and walls

Lay a level on the floor and against both walls. Older homes often have sloping floors or bowed walls; a freestanding shelf may need shims, and a wall-mounted one should be leveled to the branches, not the ceiling.

6. Tape out the footprint

Mark the height and width with painter's tape and live with it for a day. Open nearby doors, walk past it and sit where you usually sit. If the tape feels tight, size down.

Made for the Corner

A tree that fits between two walls

Our Lindenleigh corner tree bookshelf comes in five sizes from 35 to 70 inches tall and 20 to 35 inches wide, from $1,490. Send us your corner measurements and we will help you choose.

Turn your numbers into a size

Your measurement Rule of thumb
Floor to ceiling Shelf height at least 10 to 12 inches less
Left and right wall to the first obstacle Shelf width a few inches less than the shorter side
Corner out of square Add extra clearance, or choose a wall-mounted design you can adjust
Thick baseboard Allow for it in the depth, or mount above it
Window beside the corner Keep branches clear of the trim and the blind or curtain

Common corner mistakes

  • Measuring only one wall. The shorter side decides the width.
  • Forgetting the door swing. A door that opens into the corner will hit the branches.
  • Covering an outlet or switch. Note them before you choose a size.
  • Ignoring the ceiling. Branches pressed against the ceiling look cramped.
  • Skipping the wall anchor. Tall tree shelves should be fixed to the wall, even in a corner; see how to install a wall tree bookshelf safely.

A Taller Corner Tree

When the corner is the focal point

Our Fernhaven corner tree bookshelf rises like a branch with live edge tiers, in five sizes from 35 to 70 inches tall, from $1,490.

Short on space? Go smaller

If the corner is narrow or sits beside a window, a compact corner shelf gives the same natural look without the height. Our Rowanfield corner bookshelf comes in four sizes from 15 to 30 inches tall and 10 to 18 inches along each wall, from $977.90. For more small-corner ideas, see corner floating shelf ideas.

Key Takeaway

Measure floor to ceiling, then each wall from the corner to the first obstacle. Note the baseboard, check that the corner is square with the 3-4-5 test, and tape out the footprint. Choose a shelf at least 10 to 12 inches shorter than the ceiling and a few inches narrower than the shorter wall.

Woodfurnist Design Tip

Take a photo of the empty corner with the tape measure stretched along each wall. Sending that photo with your order note helps us check the fit before your shelf is made.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I measure a corner for a tree bookshelf?

Measure floor to ceiling, then each wall from the corner to the first obstacle such as a window, door, vent or outlet. Note the baseboard depth and check that the corner is square.

How much space should be above a corner tree bookshelf?

About 10 to 12 inches between the top branch and the ceiling, so the branches look natural rather than squeezed.

What if my corner is not square?

Leave extra clearance on both walls, or choose a wall-mounted design that can be adjusted when it is installed.

Does a corner tree bookshelf need to be anchored?

Yes. Tall tree bookshelves should be fixed to the wall, even when they stand on the floor in a corner.

Can a corner tree bookshelf go next to a window?

Yes, if the branches clear the window trim, blinds and curtains. Measure to the edge of the trim, not the glass.

What if my corner is very small?

Choose a compact corner shelf instead of a full tree, or a corner floating shelf in a size that fits the shorter wall.
